DIY eyes for BJD Using Polymer Clay

I want to try a few different tests for home made eyes to see what works best for me.

Here are some made from white Fimo, polymer clay.
I used Genesis heat set oils to paint the colour onto the eyeball, but you can use acrylic. I'm just using what I have.
I top coated each eye in clear gel topcoat and cured under a UV lamp.

I made a few different sizes of polymer clay balls. I tried to make sure I had matching pairs.

I put each ball onto the end of a bit of armature wire and embedded it into a hunk of clay so it would stand up nicely and I could paint them.
I baked them at 250 for 10 minutes and let them cool.

I painted some colour onto each eye trying to make matching pairs. This is harder the smaller the eye is, and these are teeny! I baked them for another 10 minutes and let them cool again.

I gave them all a couple coats of clear UV gel and cured them in the lamp for two minutes each coat.
Can't wait to try them out.

DIY Eyes For BJD Using UV Nail Gel.

I decided to try to make my own eyes for my BJD sculpt.
I may try a few different mediums and techniques until I get one I'm happy with. Here is the first try. I used UV Gel for nail extensions to make little eyeball blobs. I kind of like these. We'll see if I can improve on them a bit.

Here is what I did.

First I stuck some nail form foils to a sheet of scrap paper. I figured this would keep them flatter than if I just left them on the roll.

I made blobs of white gel using the tip of a knitting needle (It's what I had lying around) and cured them in the UV light.

Then I made dots of dark green and light green onto the white blobs and cured this also.

Here I tried a dot of blue in the middle of each eye. I liked it but it wasn't dark enough. I cured them again.

Here is a side shot so you can see the profile of the eyes. They're quite 3D already.

Here they are with a coat of top coat UV gel on them. This should seal the colour in an make them have more depth and shine.
I cured them again.

I cured them in the light one final time after I flipped each eye over. Because the white gel is opaque the UV light doesn't get through to the middle of each eye, flipping them over allows them to cure on the bottom too.

Here are two of the eyes. I didn't match them for size but they look pretty good. I think I'll have to experiment with this technique some more. It has promise.

Skully Cameo Bracelete Tutorial

We've been itching to use the new skull cameos we got from

Snapcrafty.

Maggs figured she needed a new bracelet so we made one.

Hope you like it too.

Things you'll need:

one piece of felt
floss to match the felt and two other colours for leaves and flower buds
pinking shears
sewing needle
E6000 jewelry glue
a large cameo

We cut two pieces of felt larger than the cameo using the pinking shears, we gave them about a one cm border.
on one of the pieces we glued the cameo trying to center it as much as possible.
We set it aside to dry, and put the other piece of felt in a safe place.

After the piece had dried we used the embroidery floss to stitch some leaves (lazy daisy stitch)
and some flower buds (French knots) around the top corner of the cameo.

We sewed some fancy elastic lace to the back edge of the felt oval and then sewed the other black oval to the back of the piece. This covers all the stitches on the back, makes it much neater.

We made a little satin bow and sewed it to the bottom of the cameo.

For the band of the bracelet, we cut two rectangles of felt with pinking shears that were three cm longer than our wrist measured and five cm wide. We cut the corners off of one end of each strip.
We sandwiched the elastic lace inside the two strips so it went along one side turned the end and went along the other edge. We sewed it all in place with matching thread.

We used green floss and made lazy daisy stitch leaves around the edge of the band.
None of these decorative stitches went through both layers of felt. I didn't want to see the stitches from the wrong side.

Then we used the stem stitch to make a vine that attached the leaves.

Last we made the flower buds using the french knot.

We used black thread to sew the band onto the back of the cameo felt.

Sew three snaps onto the end of the band and the matching snaps to the back of the cameo and you're done!
You can use Velcro instead if it's easier.

Looks pretty good!
May need some beads, I'm not sure yet.

Random Acts of Kindness!

Random acts of kindness don't happen as often as they should.
I wish I could say that I made them happen more often than I do. I do try to make things easier for folks on a daily basis. I smile often and try not to smile for no reason.
(I've been told it comes across as creepy. As in "Kellie! Stop smiling like that you're creeping me out!" Co workers can be so picky.)

I have been on the receiving end of some pretty amazing kindnesses!
One being this guy....



Without a note or explanation of any kind, we found this guy sitting very happily on our front porch one October morning. It took me weeks to find out that he was deposited there by a kind and thoughtful neighbour. This guy made my day!

Today I received another random act of thoughtful kindness!

A Fabulous girlie of my acquaintance swung by me at work and handed me this.

Fabulous book

The day was made!
I was awe struck by the thoughtfulness involved.

First she had to think of me when she found this treasure. This in itself is a compliment.
Then she had to remember to tuck the book inside her bag.
Then she had to remember that book was in there when she saw me.


An amazing feat of glee giving!

BJD Bones

Seriously....
every time my hands are busy, the cat steals my tea.

Here's the evenings progress.

Most of the surface sanding is done for the rough in. I can start sculpting the details next. I also have to drill out the inside cavities to accept the ball joints.
Should be fun?

BJD Update. Rough Sculpt

Here is the rough sculpt of my ball jointed doll.
I have used FIMO polymer clay.
She is just simple tubes and hips and a hollow torso so far.

I used knitting needles (metal, NOT plastic) to form the tubes that will be cut down and re sculpted to make the arms and legs.
Everything but the head has been baked at 250 for 10 minutes.
Getting the knitting needles out is tough. You have to work quickly. Hold the knitting needle with pliers and the clay with an oven mitt. Pull the tube of clay off the knitting needle using a twisting motion.

Here are the separate pieces so far.
Remember this is just an armature, everything will be re sculpted, either shaved away or added to with more clay and re baked.

So...... Ice is heavy huh?

I've posted a couple of times now about the large and beautiful icicles growing on the side of our house. We've been here for a few years now and haven't seen icicles this size before. We figured it was because we're using the upstairs room more and the heat escaping from the roof is melting the snow that is refreezing into the icicles.

Makes sense.

So what do you do about it? If you knock them off you risk breaking a window or ripping the eaves trough off the roof, or worse......loosing an eye! Those things are pointy you know!

So when I came home from work today Mr. Jimmy and I found a frazzled Mom and this in our side yard.

All the ice has pulled away from the house and brought with it roof tiles. Most of the eaves trough is now loosened from the eave and bent beyond use!


You might also notice that our fence.... or what use to be our fence is now flattened like an accordion under a fifty pound block of ice.

Snapcrafty Order

I ordered some jewelry findings and cabochons from

just before Christmas for Maggs and I.

This is everything I ordered! So much fun!!!!

I really love these skelly cameos.
I couldn't pick just one colour so I ordered one of each.

Couldn't wait to start to put things together.

I made these cute little earrings in the blink of an eye.

Then I made these little hair clips by gluing a small piece of felt to he back of a flower with the bobby pin tucked inside.

I can't wait to see what Maggs is going to make!

Pink Glitter Nails with 3D Roses

I had the day off work and used it all up on myself!
I feel very guilty.
Did my nails and documented it so I could share it with you.
I also spent the day watching the Pink Panther movies that Mr. Jimmy got me for Christmas. You can hear them in the video. So funny! Nothing like good old fashioned slapstick to make you chuckle.

I used Martha Stewart sparkles again. I like that they're subtle. The colours are transparent when you mix them with the acrylic powder and liquid.

I also used nail tips this time. I usually sculpt the tips using nail forms, but I wanted to see if this was any faster. I think it was faster. It took me about an hour and a half to do these nails. (Not counting the two and a half hours of video taping and editing.)

This is a pretty true representation of the colour. They are barley pink.
They're so girlie!

Hard to get a good shot of the rhinestone. These ones were heart shaped and pink.

Hope this helps you see how I do my nails. I think people are curious as to how long it takes to do them because I change them so often. It really doesn't take that long. Especially when you consider just putting nail polish on natural nails and letting it dry takes about an hour.

Mom's Embroidered Apron.

I made my Mom an apron for Christmas.
I embroidered birds and flowers onto it with DMC floss.

I really liked the old school tattoo art style birds in the pattern I used.
It was a Hobby iron on transfer made by HA Kidd and Company,

Some flowers and a ribbon.

Almost done.

I put some pockets on the apron so she would have someplace to put stuff. This was on one of the pockets and the little bird was on the other.

Oh yeah, here is a pic of the giant icicles from inside the house. They're growing longer and stronger every day.
